Final Fantasy VII is a role-playing game developed by Squaresoft and published by Sony Computer Entertainment America for the PlayStation. Released in North America on August 31, 1997, it marked the series' first use of 3D polygon models over pre-rendered backgrounds, as well as full-motion video cutscenes. The game follows Cloud Strife, a former elite soldier who joins the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE to fight the megacorporation Shinra, which is draining the planet's life energy. The conflict escalates when a legendary warrior, Sephiroth, emerges with a plan to become a god.

Gameplay uses the Active Time Battle system, where characters and enemies act based on a speed gauge. The unique Materia system allows players to equip magical orbs to learn spells, summons, and support abilities, offering deep customization. The game features three playable discs and an extensive world map with towns, dungeons, and hidden content.

Final Fantasy VII was a commercial and critical juggernaut, selling millions of copies worldwide and is often credited with popularizing Japanese RPGs in Western markets. Its cinematic presentation, memorable characters, and emotional narrative set new expectations for storytelling in the medium. The game's soundtrack, composed by Nobuo Uematsu, is widely celebrated. It remains one of the most influential and acclaimed video games of all time.
