The Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Turbine and set in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, launched in 2007 for Windows. Running alongside the events of The Lord of the Rings, it lets players create heroes from the free peoples, men, elves, dwarves and hobbits, and adventure across a vast, lovingly recreated Middle-earth, from the Shire and Bree to Moria, Rohan and beyond, encountering familiar characters and locations while pursuing their own epic storylines parallel to the Fellowship's journey. Praised for its faithful, atmospheric realisation of Tolkien's world and its strong, narrative-driven 'epic story' questlines, LOTRO offered the genre's standard pillars of classes, crafting, instances, raids and player housing, distinguished by its lore reverence and a notably welcoming community. Originally subscription-based, it transitioned to a free-to-play model in 2010, a move that revitalised its population and was part of the broader industry shift POCG examined in coverage of changing MMO business models. Turbine, and later Standing Stone Games, sustained it for well over a decade with numerous expansions tracing the story toward Mordor. LOTRO remains a beloved destination for Tolkien fans and a long-lived fixture of the MMORPG landscape. Stewardship later passed to Standing Stone Games, which has continued to expand the game across Middle-earth.
