Quake 4
Quake 4 is a first-person shooter developed by Raven Software and published by Activision, released in 2005 for Windows. It is the fourth main installment in the Quake series and a direct sequel to Quake II, picking up the story as Earth's marines launch a full-scale invasion of the Strogg homeworld following the death of the Makron. The game runs on id Tech 4, the same engine used for Doom 3, and features a single-player campaign, a full multiplayer suite, and support for both DirectX 9 and OpenGL rendering paths.
Unlike its predecessor Quake III Arena, which focused exclusively on multiplayer, Quake 4 returns to a story-driven single-player experience, blending corridor shooting with vehicle sequences and squad-based moments. The player takes the role of Matthew Kane, a marine who undergoes a forced Stroggification procedure partway through the game, altering his abilities and perspective. The campaign lasts approximately 10 hours and spans a variety of environments, from claustrophobic industrial corridors to open warzones. The multiplayer component retains the fast-paced, strafe-jumping deathmatch and capture-the-flag modes that defined Quake III Arena, now with updated visuals and a handful of new maps.
The game received generally positive reviews upon release, with praise for its visual fidelity, audio design, and satisfying gunplay, but criticism for its linearity, derivative structure, and unambitious multiplayer. It stands as a transitional title that demonstrates the capabilities of id Tech 4 while leaning heavily on established FPS conventions.
