About This Game

Spyro the Dragon is a platform game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, released for the PlayStation in September 1998 in North America and November 1998 in Europe. It was the debut entry in the Spyro franchise and one of the defining 3D platformers of the fifth console generation, showcasing the PlayStation's ability to render large, open environments at a time when most 3D games relied on corridor-based or camera-locked designs.

Players control Spyro, a small purple dragon who must rescue his fellow dragons from the villain Gnasty Gnorc, who has encased them in crystal across six themed homeworlds. Each homeworld connects to several smaller levels populated with enemies, collectibles, and hidden secrets. Movement centred on Spyro's charge attack and flame breath, with gliding from jumps allowing traversal across gaps. The companion dragonfly Sparx served as both a health indicator and a quality-of-life mechanic, collecting gems from defeated enemies.

Insomniac designed the game with a philosophy of continuous movement and exploration, keeping load times to a minimum and building levels that rewarded thorough searching over linear completion. The colourful, whimsical art direction and Stewart Copeland's jazz-influenced soundtrack gave the game a distinct personality that separated it from contemporary platformers.

The game was a commercial and critical success, selling over five million copies on PlayStation and spawning two direct sequels from Insomniac: Ripto's Rage (1999) and Year of the Dragon (2000). The franchise later passed through several developers before Activision acquired the IP. Toys for Bob developed the Spyro Reignited Trilogy in 2018, remaking all three Insomniac games with updated visuals while preserving the original designs. Spyro: A Realm Beyond (2027) is the first original game in the mainline series since 2004.
