Tribes: Ascend
Tribes: Ascend is a 2012 free-to-play first-person shooter developed and published by Hi-Rez Studios for Windows. A revival of the celebrated Tribes series, it is renowned for its distinctive, fast and fluid movement system built around 'skiing', frictionless sliding down slopes to build tremendous momentum, and jetpacks, enabling players to rocket across enormous outdoor maps at high speed. This emphasis on velocity, verticality and physics-driven traversal sets it apart from the cover-and-corridor design of most modern shooters, demanding precise movement and predictive, leading shots with its signature projectile weapons, especially the iconic 'spinfusor' disc launcher. The team-based multiplayer centres on objective modes such as Capture the Flag, where high-speed flag runs and skilled 'chasing' and defence create a uniquely kinetic competitive experience, supported by a class system and unlockable equipment. As a free-to-play title, it was monetised through unlocks and cosmetics. Critically well received at launch, Tribes: Ascend was praised for successfully translating the series' beloved high-speed gameplay to a modern, accessible package, earning a passionate community of skilled players. POCG noted its arrival on Steam. Though its long-term support proved uneven, it remains fondly regarded as a high-skill, fast-paced shooter and a worthy modern carrier of the Tribes legacy.
