Tribes 2
Tribes 2 is a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter developed by Dynamix and published by Sierra Entertainment in 2001. A sequel to the groundbreaking Starsiege: Tribes (1998), it expands on the original’s formula of large-scale outdoor combat, jetpacks, and vehicle play across sprawling maps supporting up to 128 players. Players choose from three armor classes, light, medium, and heavy, each with distinct capabilities, and equip loadouts of weapons, packs, grenades, and deployable assets like turrets, sensors, and inventory stations. The game emphasizes coordinated team tactics: a powerful command HUD allows designated leaders to survey the battlefield from above, issue orders, mark targets, and control base defenses. Movement is deepened by the “skiing” mechanic, letting players glide down slopes to build momentum, turning the terrain into a fast-paced playground. Vehicles, including tanks, personnel carriers, and aircraft, add further strategic layers. On release, Tribes 2 was praised for its ambition, depth, and community features, email, forums, buddy lists, and clan management were built into the interface, but it was hampered by demanding system requirements, performance issues, and a rushed launch that resulted in numerous patches. Despite a rocky start, it earned a devoted following and is remembered as one of the finest team shooters of its era.
