About This Game

Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts and LucasArts, launched in 2011 for Windows. Set in the Star Wars universe thousands of years before the films, during a fragile cold war between the Galactic Republic and the resurgent Sith Empire, it was BioWare's ambitious attempt to bring the studio's celebrated story-driven, choice-based role-playing into the MMO format. Its signature feature is a heavy emphasis on narrative: each of its eight class storylines offers a fully voice-acted, branching personal saga with companions, moral light-and-dark-side choices and cinematic dialogue, effectively delivering multiple BioWare RPGs within a persistent online world that also includes the standard MMO pillars of flashpoints, operations (raids), space combat and PvP. After a costly, subscription-based launch, it transitioned to free-to-play in 2012, which broadened its audience and helped it become a durable, long-lived service sustained for well over a decade with numerous expansions deepening its story. Praised especially for its storytelling and companion characters, SWTOR stands as the most narratively ambitious major MMORPG of its era and a beloved destination for Star Wars and BioWare fans seeking a story-rich online galaxy. More than a decade on, it remains active, sustained by ongoing expansions and a dedicated community of story-seeking players.
